Shelby Humane Society
        Fundraiser

The Shelby Humane Society would like to announce that it has received its tax-exempt status. Business and private donations are now tax-deductible for donors. Fundraising has begun for the organization. Local humane societies are not chapters of any larger humane society. Therefore, all monies, except for grants, are generated locally. Any size donations are always gratefully accepted and of course are now tax deductible. Currently donations toward the purchase of the following are needed: Animal shelter/ office, land, Fencing, newer-model computer system, combination printer/ copier/ scanner/ fax, digital camera, and office supplies. When a shelter facility is eventually opened, donations of the following new or gently-used items will be needed: kennels; crates; collars, leashes; pet toys; blankets; towels; buckets, brushes, pet shampoo, and cleaning supplies.

During the five years that the Shelby Humane Society has been in existance, a large number of cats, dogs, kittens and puppies in need of homes have continued to be placed with new families. This will continue to be a primary goal. Other goals include to stressing the importance of spaying and neutering to reduce the number of homeless pets and providing helpful information to the public on responsible pet care and pet health issues.

Future goals of the Shelby Humane Society are: To provide and maintain an animal shelter to temporarily house adoptable homeless animals; to provide a “foster care” system, which are volunteers who care for adoptable homeless animals in their homes until the animals are permanently placed. Volunteers and a coordinator for this program are greatly needed. Call Robin at 774-5688 for more information.

As part of the placement program, color flyers with pictures of animals needing homes are placed in 40 locations throughout Shelby County. The web site at shelbyhumanesociety.org also displays pictures of animals needing homes as well as other interesting and helpful information.

Another important announcement is that the public meetings of the Shelby Humane Society have a new date and location. The meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm. The new location will be the Shelby Electric Cooperative building on RT. 128 in Shelbyville. Turn left inside the front doors to enter the meeting room. All members and anyone interested are invited and encouraged to attend each month.

With the addition of a Family Membership for $35, now is a great time to join or renew your lapsed membership with the Shelby Humane Society. Individual adult memberships are $25 yearly and individual youth memberships (age 17 and under) are $15 yearly. Current paid memberships will have the option to convert to a Family Membership September 1, 2008.
